Amorim Sees Fitter, More Confident United
Manchester United’s head coach Ruben Amorim believes his squad is entering the new season with a newfound sense of confidence, freedom, and physicality. Following a challenging last campaign that ended with a Europa League final defeat and their worst league finish in over 50 years, the Red Devils have undergone a significant summer overhaul.
The arrival of new signings like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko has injected fresh energy into the team. Despite an unlucky 1-0 loss to Arsenal in their Premier League opener, Amorim was heartened by the performance, seeing it as a continuation of their promising unbeaten pre-season.
"I feel the team is more free playing the game, and that is something that I have watched during all the games since we started this season," Amorim stated. He believes this increased freedom stems from the players having more time to understand his system, allowing them to react instinctively rather than overthinking their next move. This mental shift, combined with the momentum from their strong pre-season, has led to a noticeable boost in confidence.
Amorim also pointed to tangible improvements in the team's physical data. He noted a more aggressive and proactive approach in duels and a quicker recovery of defensive positions. He cited an example from the Arsenal match where players, including veteran Casemiro, showed a new level of intensity and pace in their pressing and recovery runs.
As United prepares for their next test against Fulham, Amorim remains optimistic. While acknowledging that results are not always within their control, he emphasizes the importance of consistency in the small, fundamental aspects of the game. With key players like Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui still sidelined and a decision to be made on goalkeeper Andre Onana, the squad’s newfound confidence and fitness will be put to the test.
