FIFA raises 2026 World Cup prize pool to $655 million

The 2026 World Cup in North America is officially slated to be the most lucrative sporting event in history.

Following a FIFA Council meeting in Doha, the global governing body confirmed a staggering $655 million total prize pool, a nearly 50 percent increase over the 2022 Qatar tournament.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed the expansion as a financial milestone, fueled by projected revenues of $13 billion for the current four-year cycle.

While the total purse has ballooned, FIFA has been selective with its increases, balancing the budget against the new 48-team format and increased investment in youth competitions.

The eventual world champion will net a record $50 million, up from the $42 million earned by Argentina three years ago. Teams reaching the Round of 16 also see a significant boost, with their payout rising to $15 million, though group-stage casualties will still receive a baseline of $9 million.
