Atlético Madrid Fined by UEFA for Racial and Anti-Semitic Fan Abuse
Atlético Madrid has been hit with a significant fine from UEFA following the "despicable" and discriminatory actions of a section of their traveling support during a recent Champions League clash away at Arsenal. European football's governing body took swift action against Los Rojiblancos for instances of both racial and anti-Semitic abuse.
The incidents occurred during Atlético's visit to London, where the Spanish side was eventually thrashed 4-0 by Mikel Arteta's Arsenal. However, the result was overshadowed by the behavior of some visiting fans. Reports confirmed that supporters were caught on camera making racist monkey noises and gestures toward Arsenal fans across the barrier. Furthermore, others were observed giving Nazi salutes, leading to a detailed investigation by UEFA.
As a result of these deplorable actions, Atlético Madrid has been fined a total of €30,000 for the racial and anti-Semitic behavior. An additional €10,000 fine was levied for the throwing of objects by their supporters, bringing the total penalty handed down by UEFA to €40,000.
This is not the first time the Spanish club has faced punishment for the conduct of its fans. The club incurred a previous fine of €30,000 for "racist and/or discriminatory behaviour" following incidents at Benfica's Estadio da Luz last season. Furthermore, a section of their fans was banned for one match after lighters were thrown at Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. While the Metropolitano is renowned for one of Spain's most intense atmospheres, the recurrence of such discriminatory incidents has become a concerning and costly problem for Atlético Madrid in recent years.
